Narcisse Tordoir : the pink spy
-
In the exhibition The Pink Spy, Narcisse Tordoir tells stories in an intuitive and associative way about existential the man in a 'disordered' world, placing the figure of ‘the Oriental’ at the centre of his reflection.
The exhibition consists of five different sections, all of which function in juxtaposition with each other. First, there are new, monumental works by Tordoir himself. They are inspired by two series of etchings by the Venetian Rococo painter Giambattista Tiepolo from the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum. In the third section, Narcisse Tordoir presents an idiosyncratic selection of works from the M HKA collection with works by, among others, Guy Mees, Bernd Lohaus and Ann Veronica Janssens, with a particular focus on subjects surrounding the concepts of ‘man’, ‘world’ and ‘language’.
In the fourth section, the artist presents paintings from the Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah (United Arab Emirates). With this choice, Tordoir draws particular attention to artworks in which the urge to transform Western models into an authentic Arab visual language becomes apparent. For the last section, Tordoir selects a number of works by young artists with whom he has collaborated at the Amsterdam Rijksakademie, an institution where confrontation between different cultures is encouraged.
