BeschrijvingGovernance Complex is a plaster group that recreates and combines volumes from two original architectural maquettes of buildings in Amsterdam: the current Rijksakademie on Sarphatistraat, renovated by architect Koen van Velsen and completed in 1992, and the tentative MCA or 'Zuidasmuseum' on the corner of Fred. Roeskestraat and Parnassusweg, developed by Hartwig Art Foundation and designed by archtectural firm OMA, which started its renovation of the former courthouse and new development in 2024.
The work was first shown during Open Studios, May 30 - June 2, 2024, presented on a wooden plinth in the vicinity of other (plaster) sculptures from the Rijksakademie collection on display in the reception space, as well as the building's original maquette. The selection of sculptures was conceived together with Marietta Dirker for this occasion.
The work's title Governance Complex is a nod to Educational Complex, a 1995 artwork by Mike Kelley, while hinting at the confluence of governance structures of Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten and Hartwig Art Foundation.
The plaster group can be seen simultaneously as study object, as antiquity, as ruins, and as speculative future scenario of institutional merger, raising the question what institutional models art needs to resist private capture in times of constant financial pressures and the threat of cuts in public spending or art.
