Einstein on the beach : an opera in four acts
-
Einstein on the Beach, an Opera in Four Acts is a groundbreaking Gesamtkunstwerk by director Robert Wilson, composer Philip Glass and choreographer Lucinda Childs. It was created in 1976 and premiered in Avignon. In the Netherlands, the almost five-hour opera was performed in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. The collaboration with Glass and Childs enabled Wilson to innovate the opera genre in such a way that its influence continues to resonate. It brought Glass's synthesized minimal music to a large audience and Childs's equally repetitive dance, the so-called 'knee plays', to the continuing interest of the dance world.
