Astrid Nobel : iland / us & background material
-
This work is the result of an extensive analysis of the theme 'Island'. The actual islands where I worked for this project are the island where I was born and raised (Ameland) and a little faraway island with a small population where I didn't have a connection with whatsoever (GrÃmsey).
Along with these works a publication was issued (Iland/Us) which presents the works together with background material: fragments that contributed to their existence and final form (sketches, notes, citations from literature and science). The first part (Iland) looks upon the island from the physical boundaries, the-being-on-its-own point of view, which can stand for freedom as well as loneliness (and other contradictory terms that are also applicable to an individual). The other part (Us) approaches the island more from the perspective of a group or community, within which everything is connected to one another, forming a whole that is stronger than the sum of its parts (a characteristic that is also attributed to the materials that were used; bone, wood, mother of pearl).
