Titia Ex : juicy lights
-
The work ‘Juicy Light’ in the Ten Katestraat in Amsterdam, mainly known for the daily market held there, is executed no differently from any of her other art works. Most of her sculptures are made on location in either urban or rural areas. Each situation for which she is asked to make a visual proposal, poses a specific question that she explores in depth and for which she provides possible answers. Her answers are often in the form of a concrete opportunity via the light sculptures to engage with the location differently from the way you are used to. She creates a perception and an experience. In this she shows a great sense of aesthetics. With her sculptures Titia Ex is searching for a designed form of beauty. She especially stimulates sensory curiosity. She consequently never does anything obvious.
‘Juicy Light’ is also an active light sculpture that seeks contact with people walking through the street. Her bunches of grapes hanging above the street drip drops of light onto the people walking underneath. They set the sculptural light sources in motion. Not only do the light colours within the bunches of grapes change, whereby they respond to one another, but the hanging sculptures also project light down onto the street. She is hereby referring to the grapes becoming ripe, the sunlight that the grapes absorb, which makes them juicier and sweeter. The perception of this series of sculptures is more than a visual experience. It also appeals to other sensory functions. The bunch of grapes symbolizes life's natural resources as expressed in the poem ‘De Schepping’ (The Creation) by pastor and poet J.J.L. ten Kate, after whom the street is named. And the things you see as a light sculpture above the street are also on the Ten Kate Market stalls six days a week as fresh fruit.
