Dirk Kome : Rockanje
-
Rockanje; my parents and brother. Before my graduation at the Rietveld Academie (1999) I wanted to make a series where I, the photographer, would seem absent. In this way I give the spectator the feeling he or she is there, standing next to my subject, instead of being a bit of a voyeur.
With this in mind I started the series about my parents and my brother. They are so used to my presence that I can move around unnoticed and take pictures without them being aware and feeling the need to pose. This way a picture becomes a layered story instead of a fictional representation.
They live in an old fashioned not-modernized farm, but that's only the arena. Their pictures are about two boys, a girl and the animals they live with. Individuals with each their own hopes, desires and insecurities. A mom, a dad, a son, and their subcutaneous mutual tensions. After my graduation I didn't feel it was finished. I kept on photographing and noticed a new layer was added. The layer of time.
