Serge Onnen : the lost cent
-
The cent is the least popular coin in any monetary world, a valueless being that circulates with difficulty. Its economic worthlessness liberates it from responsibility. This collection of ink drawings by Amsterdam-based artist Serge Onnen is penetrated literally by the one-cent coin glued to its cover. A coin-sized hole is bored through the books pages, becoming the focal point of each artwork, a missing void. With this gesture, Onnen offers commentary on currency, its unstable value and meaning, and how something such as a cent is filtered by todays conventions. Included are a short story by Charles Baudelaire, The Counterfeited Coin, and a conversation with Olav Velthuis.
