ZINGERpresents for its presentation at ARCO Madrid hones in on three monumental years in
which the legacy of the country hangs in the balance. The vulnerability of the collective
is emphasised by individual achievement in a presentation that seeks to reinstate the belief in
the countries' eventual supremacy. 1974,1978 and 2010 serve as markers within the
presentation to allude to the nations' tradition and how stylistic progress reigns over 90
minutes of fame.
Nine black pictograms adorn the booth, refuting any actual artworks on display, each an echo
of a historically prosperous but an equally multifaceted state of the nation. In their merged
condition and uniform treatment these symbolic abstractions become a unified reminder of
themes that run through the countries’ history such as its merchant past, idolatry,
multiculturalism or the collective sorrow of victories denied. Simultaneously, the presentation
exudes unbridled optimism, resilience and unity of a country faced with though choices in a


though climate and its inventive nature to overcome.
The pictorial references, whilst distinct, are dictated by their interchangeability, providing
both a mirror to a consistently avant-garde cultural past as well as offering a portal for a
generation to come. A limited edition print portfolio designed by Remco van Bladel
accompanies the presentation. Half the proceeds of this unique portfolio will be donated to the
Rijksakademie voor beeldende kunsten and De Ateliers, to ensure a bright and equally
pioneering future for young artists today, so they too can write their own histories on the
palimpsest of art history.
